The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Students apply by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), usually in their third year of high school. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Program receives approximately 1.5 million entrants. Adam was one of only 16,000 students nationwide to advance to the Semifinalist stage.
In order to become a Finalist, the selected students have to complete a detailed scholarship application that details the students’ academic record, participation in extracurricular activities and community service, leadership abilities, employment, and any honors or awards received. Semifinalists must also write an essay, sit for the SAT exam, and receive a qualifying SAT score.
Over 90 percent of the semi-finalists will be named as finalists for the scholarship. Of those finalists, about half go on to receive National Merit Scholarships. More than 200 colleges and universities around the country offer automatic scholarships for National Merit Finalists.
“The Parnassus staff and I are extremely proud of Adam for being recognized as a Semifinalist,” said Parnassus Preparatory School Executive Director Constance Ford. “Adam has distinguished himself through his diligence and hard work in our classical program and has always pursued his education to the fullest extent.”
